How to Prevent Identity Theft

Identity theft is becoming more and more of a problem. The criminal mind is always thinking of methods to stay ahead of the system. Honest individuals often never think of these methods of deception. Once your identity has been assumed and your credit ruined, its very difficult to clear your name and repair the damage. So how does a person protect himself or herself from becoming a victim of identity theft? There are a number of precautions that may be taken in order to keep your finances and personal data secure and protected.

First of all it's important to know how a criminal obtains your personal information. Many criminals use mail as a tool for finding their next victim. They take mail intended for someone else, and use the information inside to steal that person's identity. With all of the credit card and financing offers sent to consumers these days, this isn't a surprise. Many of these mailings contain credit card numbers and pre-approved credit card offers. A criminal intent on stealing the identity of another can easily set up a post office box, sign up for offers under the name of that individual, and use that person’s credit without their knowledge. The criminal receives cash advances and purchases on as many goods and services as they possibly can before the first bill becomes due. Since the credit card company only has the post office box address and phone information used by the criminal, the victim remains unaware that someone has assumed their identity and stolen their credit. When they try to use their credit in the future, a potential creditor runs their credit report, and they find out that their identity has been stolen and their credit virtually ruined.

Dishonest store personnel and other business personnel have also been known to steal the identity of others. They look for national insurance numbers on personal checks and in personal records such as medical files. Never have your national insurance number imprinted on your personal checks. National insurance numbers were originally designed for the purpose of obtaining social security, but these numbers unfortunately ended up being used as personal identification numbers. If a business asks for your national insurance number, you do not have to supply them with that number. Most reputable businesses will settle for a driver’s license number instead. They want a way to track you down if they discover your check to be fraudulent, but they can easily do so with a driver’s license number. Protect your national insurance number, and never give it out to anyone. Don’t carry your national insurance card in your wallet. Keep it at home in a secret location or locked up.

It’s a good idea to invest in a paper shredder. Criminals have gone through trash to obtain credit card offers and personal information. Never throw away items that could be used to steal your credit without destroying those items first. Shred all unwanted credit cards and other financial offers as soon as they arrive. Destroy unused bank checks as well.

At least once a year it’s important to obtain a personal credit report. Free credit reports are sometimes offered online through finance companies hoping to gain your business. Alternately you can pay for a copy of your credit report directly from one of several agencies. The cost is well worth the peace of mind you’ll gain. Stay one step ahead of the criminals so you don’t become the next victim of identity theft.
